We're eager to share information concerning introductory courses. Materials for current and recent offerings of our own courses are on the web: lecture transparencies, assignments, exams, solutions, etc. You're welcome to use them as you wish:
In cooperation with the Information School, we also offer CSE 100/INFO 100 (Fluency in Information Technology).
The C and C++ languages were used in 142/143 from 1996 until 2001. Beginning in 2001, both courses were remodeled to take a more object-oriented approach, with Java as the language. Read more information about the transition.
Starting in 1996, we produced occasional websites with the CSE 142 transparencies accompanied by an audio recording of the lecture. These are no longer available, due to subsequent changes in supporting software (file formats and servers). Beginning in Autumn Quarter 1998, we cooperated with a number of community colleges in a Tutored Video project. Video and audio of selected offerings of CSE 142 and CSE 143 (in C/C++) were created and are still available. There are as yet no versions of these material in Java.
Web materials for our other courses are also available:
As an outgrowth of a full-day workshop of UW and community and technical college computer science instructors held in Spring 1996, UW-Seattle collaboratively defined procedures for ensuring automatic UW transfer credit for courses similar to CSE 142. These procedures essentially involved a review of basic course materials, and were carried out within CSE. In 2001, the CSE142 and CSE143 courses were redesigned to use Java. Transfer policies were reviewed, another meeting with community college instructors was held in Autumn, 2001, and procedures have been somewhat revised.
Community and technical college courses may transfer to the UW as CSE 142 or as more generic university or CSE credits:
Note: The printed "UW Transfer Guide" will be temporarily out-of-date as changes are made to course equivalences. An online version is available at http://www.washington.edu/students/uga/transfer/course_equiv.html.
As another outgrowth of the workshops, we have established an email reflector for interchange of information and ideas among introductory computer science instructors throughout the state. Only subscribed members are able to read or post messages. To be added to the group, visit http://mailman.cs.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/cc-instructors. To send email to the list, use the address cc-instructors@cs.washington.edu.
